Our Learning in the Autumn Term

Maths Overview

This half term we will be focusing on Number and Place Value. This includes representing numbers up to 1000, ordering amd comparing numbers and finding 10/100 more or less than a given number. The children will be taught calculation strategies that will help them solve mathematical problems. This will then lead to solving addition and subtraction problems focusing on the calcualtion methods. To ensure children are able to explain how they know their answer is correct, they will have a variety of reasoning questions to deepen their understanding. In Year 3, each week the children will have a timestable test to ensure by the end of the year they are secure with their 3, 4, 8 and 12 timestables (as well as 2, 5, 10, 3 and 6 which are taught in Year 2).

English Overview

This half term we will start by learning to write a diary entry from the perspective of the main character in our core text 'Ug The Boy genius of The Stone Age.' The children will be exposed to a variety of diary entries which will enable them to understand the purpose and main features of a diary. They will include their knowledge they have learned about Stone Age from our History lessons. For the second half term we will look at Poetry. The children will learn about the different types of poetry and what makes an interesting poem. This includes generating rhyming couplets, alliteration and similes. They will end the term by writing their very own poem!
